Johan de Meij charmed Karviná

The famous Dutch composer and conductor Johan de Meij enthralled the audience of the Municipal House of Culture in Karviná. On Sunday 6 April 2025 he performed his three works with our orchestra.

At the opening of the concert, Continental Overture was performed under his baton. Then came the festive moment of the world premiere of Essay No. 1. This piece was composed on the theme of the Great Moravian Chorale and its performance was co-composed with our orchestra by the excellent Male Chamber Choir of the Academy of Music im. Karol Szymanowski Katowice (choirmaster Krystyna Krzyzanowska-Loboda). The end of the first half of the concert offered a truly great experience. Under the baton of Johan de Meij, his monumetnal work "Casanova", a concerto for cello and symphonic wind orchestra was performed. Ladislav Mariaš played a virtuoso solo in this almost 30-minute piece.

The second half of the concert was devoted to arrangements by our guest Johan de Meij. Under the baton of our chief conductor Filip Urban, we heard Antonín Dvořák's American Suite and Suite from Sergei Prokofiev's ballet Romeo and Juliet. At the end of the concert, the enthusiastic audience also cheered for the encore, which was the famous Waltz No. 2 by Dmitri Shostakovich. This entire concert with special guest Johan de Meij was a historic moment for our orchestra and one of the highlights of our more than 100-year history.

The concert was held with the support of the Statutory City of Karviná, OKD Foundation, Landek Foundation and Život umělce Foundation.
